Spellbound (2011) Also known as My Girlfriend Can See Ghosts is a romantic comedy about a magician who falls in love with a girl who can see ghosts. Jo-Goo (Lee Min-ki) is a street magician who sees Yeo-Ri (Son Ye-jin) in his audience, a scary girl. She became an inspiration for Jo-Goo’s show that made him famous. She had a part in his show but was very secretive. Events from the party they attended led to them talking. Then Jo-Goo finds out everything about Yeo-Ri. She can see the ghost of her late best friend, who keeps scaring people around her. The two start as friends but end up having feelings for each other. Of course, the ghost appears in the storyline, but we won’t tell you the plot twists and other cute things. The movie grossed almost 19 million dollars, and there’s a good reason for it - it’s unusual and worth watching. The Handmaiden (2016) This erotic psychological thriller is inspired by the novel Fingersmith (2002). The director Park Chan Wookchanged the setting from the Victorian era to Korea under Japanese colonial rule. The story follows a con man, Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo), who plans to seduce a Japanese heiress Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee). He wants to marry her and take away her money. Fujiwara hires a pickpocket, Sook-he(Kim Tae-Ri), to help him convince Hideko to marry him. Because of many twists and love triangles, this movie is a must-watch for all who love a good thriller and even better love plots. The budget for this piece was a bit under 9 million dollars, but it earned almost 40 million. Not only did The Handmaiden earn money, but it also got a reward for the Best Film Not in the English Language at the 71st British Academy Film Awards. Zero Woman 2 (1995) Zero Woman: Final Mission is a mixture of action and romance. This film series follows Rei (Natsuki Ozawa), a beautiful female officer at Zero Division. In Zero Woman 2, she hunts down a gang of young thieves who try to rob a mob boss. She needs to balance gangs on the streets, mob lords, and her faithfulness to her partner. My Sassy Girl (2001) This movie has a good story. It started as diary-like entries from Ho-Sik Kim about his relationship with his girlfriend that he posted online. Those stories were later translated into a book. It became a bestseller and finally ended in the form of a movie. The story follows Gyeon-woo, a guy who just can’t find a partner, and “the Girl” he meets after he saves her life. They were at a train station when she almost fell under the train. Gyeon-woo saved her at the last second. They boarded the same train, and he could not take his eyes off her, even though she was extremely drunk. Later, he learns the reason behind her drunkenness, and she becomes an active protagonist in his life. This unique love story was in the top five highest-grossing movies ever made in South Korea (almost 33 million dollars). That sounds even more amazing when you know this movie is a romantic comedy.
