If there’s one film that has received a surprising push from the latest critics group awards, it’s definitely SS Rajamouli’s “RRR.” What success a story this film has become.
“RRR” has turned into a dark horse contender this awards season and it feels as though its momentum will keep growing in the weeks to come. There is a massive campaign currently going for it, and the film has also appeared on many critics’ ten best lists.
Now Rajamouli also makes sense as the international pick by the Director’s Branch, stealing the thunder away from Park Chan-wook.
It turns out that the Indian selection committee are dumb as a brick. “RRR” was right in front of them, but they instead chose a nothingburger Cinema Paradiso ripoff with zero international support.
The FYC awards/Oscars campaign will be going for Best Picture, Best Director, Actor, Screenplay, Original Song, Score, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, Production Design, VFX and more categories.
“RRR” has become a sensation in the US, with incredible numbers on Netflix and critical backing to boot. Why India would decide on the unknown “Last Film Show” is mind-boggling. However, as far as Oscar voters go, is it realistic enough to believe that they will be willing to watch a 3-hour hyperkinetic Indian action musical about the evils of British colonialism?
Rajamouli turned some heads last week when his, um, endearing Sight and Sound list leaked online. In it he listed “Kung Fu Panda,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” “Apocalypto” and “Forrest Gump” as his all-time favorites.
