Now,Vanity Fair has a first look at the new adaptation of “Dune,” with a newly released photo of the lead character, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet. The image has Paul walking on his home planet of Caladan, right before he moves to Arrakis and the action starts. Interviewed by Vanity Fair, Chalamet gave more details on what to expect with Paul’s journey: Warner Brothers seem to have given Villeneuve carte-blanche to splatter whatever his art desires on the screen with this next movie....

Luhrmann’s musical biopic is getting a lot of hype, to the point where I think it will do very well at the box office. Elvis isn’t that popular amongst Gen Z, but most everyone knows who he is and the marketing for the film has been stellar. As for awards prospects, I am just not sure really sure right now. It’ll depend on box-office and, especially, the critics. The movie currently has a 62 on Metacritic but that will go up, the question is how high....

As far as I’m concerned, “Avengers: Endgame” was the proper ending to my superhero journey. This year, I slugged my way through “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi,” “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” “Eternals,” and “The Suicide Squad.” Suffice to say, I’m superhero’ed out. ’No Way Home’ is getting decent reviews and I would think I’ll eventually watch it somewhere, either in theaters or at home, but I’m just not that excited by the prospect of watching this genre ever again....

I really hate to say it, but isn’t this the definition of selling out? Chandor’s style is auteur-driven and heavily inspired by his love for ‘70s cinema. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with the superhero genre, especially when done right (“The Winter Soldier,” “The Dark Knight” “Spider-Man 2”), but, goddammit, couldn’t Chandor just pass on this and work on another original movie? I do realize that he may have signed up to direct the ‘Spider-Man’ movie to pay for the bills and be able to finance his next personal project, but it’s incredibly depressing to think that that’s just how the industry rolls these days for talented folk such as Chandor....

Next May’s Cannes Film Festival is set to be packed with buzz-worthy titles and you can add another one to that list. Skipping the Venice Film Festival this year will be hometown boy Nanni Moretti, whose “Tre Piani” is now set for a Cannes 2021 world premiere [via Il Fatto Quotidiano]. This is a crushing loss for Venice boss Alberto Barbera, who was counting on Moretti’s film to launch his festival this coming September....

Well, Deadline is reporting that Soderbergh’s film has been picked up by Netflix. They are also confirming that the cast will also be composed of Antonio Banderas, Gary Oldman, David Schwimmer, and Meryl Streep. “The Laundromat” is based on the true story of a money laundering scheme at the Panama-based law firm of Mossack Fonseca. The firm created thousands and thousands of fake “companies” to help their client base avoid paying taxes....

We knew something was coming in regards to Netflix cutting back on their massive spending of projects. After all, in an earnings report on April 19, the company was said to have lost 44% of its stock value, and had 200,000 less subscribers to its name. Layoffs occurred. Total panic. And now, an anonymous source is telling THR that the days of giving great directors the wiggle room to make whatever passion project they want are long gone....

Today, it’s Best Supporting Actor. If this were any other year then maybe House of Gucci’s Jared Leto wouldn’t get an Oscar nomination for Supporting Actor. But the category barely has legitimate contenders this year, a narrative hasn’t really shaped, and Leto’s outrageous performance deserves a nod. And so, all hail Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci. This is the kind of gonzo performance that deserves both an Oscar and a Razzie....

AMPAS Quote: “For the 94th Oscars (2022) and 95th Oscars (2023), submitting a confidential Academy Inclusion Standards form will be required for Best Picture consideration, however meeting inclusion thresholds will not be required for eligibility in the Best Picture category until the 96th Oscars (2024).” I’ve scrolled through the new “inclusion standards” and I assume that around 90% of past Best Picture winners would not qualify for the award today....

It’s definitely been watched by a very select few, but barely any Guild screenings, nobody is really talking about it and if SP really wanted it to be seen then there’d be more buzz going around. There is still a review embargo for “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” but Variety’s Owen Gleiberman included it in his top ten of 2022 and thus was allowed to write a nice lengthy blurb on it....

Coincidentally, “Joyland” actually managed to be Pakistan’s official Oscar submission for the Best International Film category. So, go figure. Maybe this ban will politicize voters to push it towards the next round of voting aka the Oscar shortlist of fifteen films. More than 92 countries submitted a film for the category, “Joyland” was always a serious contender to make it to the next round. Set in Lahore, Pakistan, “Joyland” has its main protagonist, a family man, joining an erotic dance theater and falling in love with a trans starlet....

We are past the halfway mark for the year and World of Reel is polling critics on their five to seven best films of 2021. Quality has been fairly scarce so far this year, but 75 critics managed to find at least five worthy titles to submit. As of now, the results are scheduled to go live next Monday, but I’m tempted to post the whole enchilada by mid-week. We shall see....

Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux: The film is a “love letter to the Hollywood of his childhood, a rock music tour of 1969, and an ode to cinema as a whole.” As for Mektoub, which, I was told, includes a prolonged sex scene, Kechiche-style, Fremaux said he “saw the film last Thursday, as it was still being edited, and definitely right in the middle of edits.” Running four effing hours, Intermezzo will screen at the end of the festival “so the DCP has time to get there....

Here’s what I had to say about “The Nest” back at Sundance 2020: “Sean Durkin’s “The Nest” was met with tepid applause at its world premiere screening last night at the Eccles Theater. It’s not that Durkin’s slow-burn-of-a-movie is bad, actually it’s quite good, an artfully rendered take on the disintegration of a family. It’s just that the film goes by its own rhythms and may test the patience of restless audiences expecting something that is plot-heavy....
