Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and later, Zack Snyder’s movie adaptation, were always hyper-contemplative of reality, at least relative to other superhero fare. In HBO’s follow-up series, a radically different beast to Moore’s original, it’s mostly reflective of race in America. Up until Episode 6, I wasn’t necessarily taken by the new series either. Many of the episodes up to that point felt a little too convoluted for my tastes. The brilliant aspect of this particular episode is how well it integrates things that are so singular, but universal that even a viewer who hadn’t seen the previous five episodes could easily get sucked into 6’s groove....

As post-production started on “Roma,” Cuaron found the Lynch masterwork to be the most peculiar of inspirations. Much like the first film, this is shot mockumentary-style, Borat is still very much the anti-Semitic television personality, but if the former was a film of and for its moment, with a Bush-whacked America craving to be exposed, now, in the age of the internet, the exposures in “Subsequent Moviefilm” just aren’t as shocking, there isn’t anything revelatory about its findings. Add in the fact that it feels rather rushed, for streaming purposes, no doubt to influence the upcoming election in some way shape, or form, and the result turns out to be a tad too underwhelming and-familiar....

Pixar had a streak of great films for around 10 or so years in the aughts and early 2010s — every movie they released was either very good or a flat-out masterpiece. They took the kind of major artistic risks that has been missing in their output these last 7 or 8 years . Think of the radical, dialogue-free first act of “WALL-E,” the touching 10-minute life story of Carl and Ellie in “Up!...

Shockingly enough, none of these three films compares to Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” (159 minutes). The 2 hour and 49 minute movie is set to be the longest of Luhrmann’s career. That’s a very ambitious runtime. At some point, there was a rumour that it test-screened at 195 minutes, so a 26 minute snip may have occurred. “Elvis” will be shown out of Competition on 05.20.22 at the Lumiere theatre. It’s set to open in theatres around a month later on June 24th....

‘Everything Everywhere’ beat the far-worthier “Aftersun” and “TÁR” last night, winning the coveted Best Feature prize. The under-40 crowd loves this movie. Just to show another example of the age disconnect, Matt Neglia tweeted being bewildered by his father’s dislike of the film after screening it for him. Best Lead Performance went to Danielle Deadwyler for “Till.” Todd Field’s “TÁR” and Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” were also rewarded with Best Screenplay and Best Breakthrough Director, respectively....

Starring John Magaro (“Orange Is the New Black”) and Orion Lee (“Critical”), “First Cow” will be released on March 6, 2020, by A24. The film had subtle bows last year at the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. I wrote in my review: “If it does feel slight at times, the setup is meant to test the viewer’s patience for eventual and multiple dramatic payoffs — it slowly but surely sneaks up on you and gets you invested in the fates of its two lead characters....

The trailer has just been revealed and with a spanking new premiere date (Netflix, 11.24), this is ready and primed for Oscar. I think, Solely based on the footage alone, this is a cinematic soap opera through and through about domestic family values. No men on sight here, just Glenn Close‘s bumblefuck mother and Amy Adams‘ addict daughter Based on the memoir by J.D. Vance, the film chronicles his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Adams) and how he was raised by his resilient grandmother Mamaw (Close)....

This aligns well with a recent confession from screenwriter Eric Roth that the film will be released in November. Maybe it’ll be pushed back by a month to December, who knows, but “Killers of the Flower Moon” is definitely going to be released this year. I’m hearing Robert De Niro’s role in this one is quite chewy, maybe a ninth Oscar nomination is in order for him in 2023. Really, the whole film just feels like one big Oscar juggernaut waiting to happen....

“This looks glorious. A dash of “Punch Drunk Love” mixed in with the character mosaic of “Boogie Nights” and, dare I say it, Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some!” “The teaser clearly announces the film as being about the romance between Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim. There are side characters, including those played by Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, and Tom Waits, but that’s that. It’s all about the punch-drunk young romanace between Haim and Cooper — the chaos surrounding them feels theatrical and second-fiddle....
