A day and date release via VOD/Theatrical is planned for the film, which currently has a 63 on Metacritic. Despite the tepid reception, “The Stars at Noon” surprisingly won the Grand Prix at Cannes (basically, third place). The film has no awards prospects lined up for it, especially after the cool reception it garnered at Cannes. Know what? It’s not the total trainwreck many would have you believe. The first half is quite solid, but it completely falls apart in the choppy second hour....

Set in Baltimore on New Year’s Eve, a talented but troubled police officer (Woodley) is recruited by the FBI’s chief investigator (Mendelsohn) to help profile and track down a mass murderer. Szifron’s “Wild Tales” was one of the major highlights of Cannes 2014. There had been rumors that “Misanthrope” was submitted for this past year’s edition of the festival, but it was ubiquitously absent from the official selection. The actual synopsis for “Misanthrope” sounds a tad too pedestrian and one would have expected a more prestigious arthouse distributor to buy the rights … “Wild Tales” consisted of six short stories, tackling the extremities of human behavior and what happens when people are pushed to the brink....

A week after reporting that David Cronenberg’s next movie will be “Shrouds,” the trades have joined the party and made it “official. One thing the trades don’t seem to be mentioning this morning is that “Shrouds” is from Cronenberg’s aborted Netflix project we had previously spoken of. One thing’s for sure though, we finally have a clearer picture of how the Oscar race looks like. Most definitely check these three titles out, the Linklater is now available to stream on Netflix so you don’t even have to get out of the house. The other two are in theaters. Looking ahead at the April movie schedule, there’s also an April 11th release of Daniel Roher’s “Navalny” — a documentary about Putin’s poisoning of his political opponent that stands a good chance at getting a Best Documentary nom come next year’s Oscars....

According to a press release, “Broker” will follow a group of individuals whose lives become “intertwined around a mysterious ‘Baby Box’, which is a box designed to allow people, who are unable to raise children, to deposit their babies anonymously.” The journalist also confirms what I had reported on 11.19.21, that Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” will be part of Cannes 2022. In that same report, I had also mentioned that Ruben Ostlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” would join Park and Kore-eda’s films in competition....

The latter, Scott’s epic, started shooting in February and wrapped production on May 17th in Malta. I know we were told by Apple that it would be a 2023 release, but c’mon … Scott’s last film, “House of Gucci,” ended filming in May 2021 and was then released in November. There is likely more VFX work to be done on “Napoleon” than on ‘Gucci,’ especially, I presume, war scenes. Scott will be shooting the “Gladiator” sequel this fall, there is no reason to think that 8 months of post-production isn’t enough to deliver “Napoleon” on time for a December release....

Anne Thompson and Eric Kohn have also added in their two cents this morning on their Screen Talk podcast. They are even more hyperbolic, calling it a “major Oscar contender.” Good God. I’m not supposed to watch “Wakanda Forever” until next week, but this is alarming. The reactions yesterday were NOT backflips from critics. Even the usually very fair Scott Mantz had some major reservations. From what I gathered, based on yesterday’s reactions, the film is flawed at 161 minutes, but many (actually, most) are willing to let go of the imperfections to praise the film....

This piqued my curiosity, which directors and films, if any, had Godard admired in his later years. And so, I started reading. There was his adoration for Kiarostami, but other sources confirmed that he also praised older works from Coppola, De Palma, Scorsese (kind of), Warhol, Cassavetes, Emshwiller, Brakhage, Fassbinder, and even Korine. It’s safe to assume Godard was a fan of Woody Allen as well, given that he cast Allen as himself in one of his movies; In a “King Lear” cameo, Allen could be seen safety-pinning strips of film together, and then leaping into a pile of them....

Until then, we have a de facto frontrunner in Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.” And yet, I don’t know a single soul who was blown away by Belfast. Unless you count former Academy head honcho and producer Sid Ganis, who was quoted at Telluride as saying that “Belfast” was “one of the best films he’s ever seen in his life.” What that single quote courtesy of Ganis did for Branagh’s film is give it the kind of momentum that most of the other Oscar contenders would have died to get....

History of game-movie crossovers A recent example of a great game-movie crossover is Uncharted- an action-adventure film starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Its origins are in the popular games franchise with the same name. Treasure hunter Nathan Drake peppers this box office hit with the sort of stunts and gravity-defying antics normally confined to the world of gaming, thanks to cutting-edge CGI techniques. Possibly the first major game to movie crossover was Super Mario Bros in a 1993 film....

Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” will start production in October and wrap up in December, according to one source. It’ll star Zac Efron, Harris Dickinson and Jeremy Allen White. A24 is set to produce. The drama will tell the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport in the US from the 1960s to present day. Back in September, I had zero expectations going into the TIFF world premiere and was pleasantly surprised. I had a blast watching the film. It’s such a movie-movie, all it wants to do is entertain you and the filmmaking is slickly rendered by Johnson. Do I have any desire to watch it again. Nope. This sequel is outrageous in its implausibility, but I didn’t care. Johnson infuses such slick style and invention to his film that it’s too infectious not to be caught up in its peeling onion narrative....

Barbera is screening the final film of late Korean director Kim Ki-duk. The filmmaker was accused of rape by multiple women before his death, this hasn’t stopped Barbera from screening Kim Ki-duk’s final statement, “Call of God.” Barbera is no stranger to controversy. In 2019 he screened Craig Zahler’s excellent “Dragged Across Concrete,” when no other film festival wanted to touch it. Ditto 2019’s “Waiting For the Barbarians,” starring Johnny Depp....

Waking up in a world he knows nothing about, present-day Brooklyn, Herschel learns that it’s practically impossible for him to adapt to 21st-century values — this culture clash delivers the biggest laughs of the film. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are miscast as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and, to make matters worse, Aaron Sorkin’s lifeless filmmaking drowns it out even further. This is bland and unimaginative visual direction that sucks the energy out of every frame. The visuals are flat, the energy is stale, and our curiosity wanders every few seconds. It’s a film made for baby boomers who may have grown up watching ‘Lucy,’ but that’s about it....
