I will also be catching Alice Diop’s “Saint Omer,” which has to now be the frontrunner for the French Oscar submission. Last year’s Fremaux-led committee choosing Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” over Audrey Diwan’s “Happening” was a controversial one. Ducournau won the Palme d’Or and Diwan won the Golden Lion at Venice. I liked both movies, but Diwan’s was the more Oscar-baity film. In hindsight, choosing the more polarizing “Titane” was probably the wrong decision to make....

It’s a highly underrated movie that doesn’t get the credit it deserves because it is directed by Peter Berg, a conservative-minded filmmaker who doesn’t shy away from paying tribute to American heroism in every film. Yes, I know, American heroism isn’t supposed to be a divisive issue, but in 2020 it is. “Patriots Day” shows cops trying to serve and protect, now, how possibly uncool can that be in this current climate?...

It does feel like franchise-building, a film that, surprisingly, preaches to the already converted. I am just not part of the Pokemon universe of games, and manga, and movies, and trading cards to fully appreciate many of the narrative quirks of this movie. Yes, there is heavy exposition for the newbie viewer, such as myself, which then leads us to a decent but overcooked plot straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel, but you don’t feel invested at all in any of this, unless you are a Pokemaniac....
