Well, Deadline is reporting that Soderbergh’s film has been picked up by Netflix. They are also confirming that the cast will also be composed of Antonio Banderas, Gary Oldman, David Schwimmer, and Meryl Streep. “The Laundromat” is based on the true story of a money laundering scheme at the Panama-based law firm of Mossack Fonseca. The firm created thousands and thousands of fake “companies” to help their client base avoid paying taxes. Eventually, a whistleblower released a massive amount of documents related to the scheme. There’s no release date as of now for ‘The Laundromat,’ but I can only assume it will be released next year for Oscar consideration. Soderbergh’s hasn’t really made Oscar-bait type fare since, gosh, 2000’s one-two punch of ‘Erin Brokovich’ and ‘Traffic.’ Of course, ‘The Laundromat’ could easily turn out to be another artsy affair for the talented writer-director but something tells me that Meryl Streep’s presence will not make it become that kind of movie.
