Due to COVID, Sundance switched from in-person to virtual screenings. So far all the films invited have gone along with the new plan. Except for Michel Hazanavicius‘ “Final Cut.” It turns out that Hazanavicius wants his film shown on the big screen. The weird part is that “Final Cut,” along with in-person screenings, was supposed to screen virtually as well before COVID messed up Sundance’s plans. Did he not know that? Did Cannes offer him a last-minute midnight slot? It’s stuff to ponder … Hazanavicius won an Oscar for directing “The Artist,” a Best Picture winner, but his following four films, post-Oscar glory, have been fairly negligible. Still, he was set to be one of the bigger directing names to appear on the Sundance 2022 roster. This is a major blow for the fest. Contribute Hire me
