First off, I’ve only been in-depth covering the fest since 2011, so my experiences comes from that starting point. With that being said, I have very fond memories of 2017. That year, almost every day there was a great movie being screened. The lineup of films included Get Out, Call Me By Your Name, The Big Sick, Columbus, A Ghost Story, Mudbound, Ingrid Goes West, Icarus, Wind River, Beach Rats, and Menashe. One can only complain so much about the lack of quality at Sundance 2022 since it was always going to have the virtual component and many filmmakers opted out of sending their films due to the format. It’ll be interesting to see how South by Southwest fares in March with its in-person edition and the fact that the Austin-based fest has already taken a few titles that would have otherwise been at Sundance this year.
