David Lynch Will Play John Ford In Steven Spielberg S The Fablemans World Of Reel

Steven Spielberg’s upcoming autobiographical drama, “The Fabelmans,” has just added none other than David Lynch to a cast that already includes Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle, and Julia Butters. Variety admits that Lynch’s “role remains a closely guarded secret,” which is odd since the other roles in the film have been notably cast and announced without secrecy. So, what gives? Could Lynch be portraying John Ford? There have been many stories of a young Spielberg sneaking onto film sets and meeting legends of the era....

Director Paul Schrader Doesn T Think Kevin Spacey Should Be Punished For His Art World Of Reel

The writer-director of “First Reformed” has had incredble momentum building for his film ever since it won at the Gothams earlier this week and the nabbed him a Screenplay prize via the New York Film Critics Circle yesterday, not to mention that same voting body giving Ethan Hawke a well-deserved Best Actor award for that film. Suffice to say, before today’s news, Schrader was on tap to potentially win the Best Original Screenplay award at the Oscars....

Ethan Hawke There Already Is A Popular Film Oscar It S Called The Box Office World Of Reel

AMPAS president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson were trying to adhere to short-attention-spanned Joe and Jane popcorn with this category. The backlash was merited; after all, it sounded like a category that belonged more at the Nickelodeon awards or the People’s Choice awards than the Oscars. From the Academy’s point of view, the idea for this category was rather simple: the Oscars sink to new ratings lows every year, and Marvel, the industry’s tentpole company, is barely, if ever, recognized by them....

France Sides With Les Mis Rables Over Portrait Of A Lady On Fire For International Oscar Consideration World Of Reel

Beating out the favorite, Celine Sciamma’s critically lorded ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’, is documentarian turned feature filmmaker Ladj Ly’s ‘Les Misérables’. And while this has come as a shock to many, especially considering ‘Portrait’s far superior critical performance (93 on Metascore compared to the 71 of ‘Les Misérables’, it is clear, as stated by Gregory Ellwood from The Playlist, that the film has operated as ‘a rallying cry amid notable members of the French film-making community’ which may very well have pushed it over the edge in its bid to land the French submission....

Gina Gershon Defends Working With Woody Allen This Man Is Not A Sexual Predator World Of Reel

Allen, now 83 years of age, was accused by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, of molesting her when she was just 7 years of age. She is now 34, and, in the wake of #MeToo, has started speaking up again about her alleged claim, thus thrusting the case back into the spotlight after years of dormant media attention. Gershon responded to a few of the naysayers on her Instagram by saying “I’ve done extensive research and I can say with very clear conscience that I’m so happy to be working with him....

Greta Gerwig S Barbie Keeps Being Insufferably Hyped Up World Of Reel

Film Twitter users, at least the most vocal ones, seem to firmly be camped on the side of Gerwig’s film — gee, I wonder why? BuzzFeed proclaimed the trailer is proof that “Barbie” is the next blockbuster by using tweets from random people to pump their theory forward. Article after article has been hyping up Gerwig’s film, with even Yahoo claiming it could “launch a franchise to compete with” Cameron’s ‘Avatar....

Greta Gerwig To Direct Two Narnia Movies For Netflix World Of Reel

According to What’s On Netflix, Greta Gerwig is going to direct two “Narnia” movies for Netflix. In October 2018, Netflix had announced that they were collaborating with The C.S. Lewis estate in a multi-year deal where they would produce movies based on Lewis’ books. Now, according to their source, Gerwig is very “likely” on-board to direct the movies. So, after the critical acclaim of “Lady Bird,” Gerwig has adapted “Little Women,” made a peculiar “Barbie” movie and is now, potentially, going to Narnia....

John Waters Best Films Of 2021 Topped By Leos Carax S Annette World Of Reel

I can never get enough of Waters’ eclectic tastes — just the sheer fact that he is responsible for making “Pink Flamingos,” one of the most tasteless movies ever created, ranks him way up in my books. I’m loving the early love from both Cahiers and Waters for Bruno Dumont’s “France.” Also, Leos Carax’s “Annette” — which tops his list — seems to be getting a major reevaluation from the high brow critics....

Lee Chang Dong S Burning Is The Best Movie Of 2018 So Far World Of Reel

Bar none, the best movie I saw at the last Cannes Film Festival. There wasn’t even debate. Why? Because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie quite like the genre-morphing “Burning.” Even if it uses many of the enticing tropes of a whodunit drama, it feels incredibly fresh. Some of the filmmaker coming out of South Korea these days are utterly fascinating. My full review for The Playlist. Contribute Hire me...

Leos Carax S Next Film With Jennifer Lawrence World Of Reel

Whatever they’re working on, I hope it gets shot very soon. Even more intriguing, this comes after a French production site had marked a new Leos Carax project as shooting in Paris between September and October, only for it it to quickly be taken down. The producer listed was Charles Gillibert. Something might be brewing. Carax is coming off the Cannes-winning “Annette.” However, he tends to take years between making films....

Locarno Film Festival Cancels 2020 Edition World Of Reel

Locarno was set to take place on August 5-15. Locarno artistic director Lili Hinstin said in a statement that organizers “looked at a number of different scenarios” but could not foresee an August-set festival taking place this year. “For us the priority was to save the physical aspect of the festival, which for us is very closely tied to its setting since Locarno audiences are in this amazing place between a lake and a mountain where you have the Piazza Grande with this gigantic screen,” Hinstin said, adding no digital or virtual component will be added either because “during the immediate post-confinement period I don’t think people will really want to sit in front of their computer screens....

This latest development m could result in being the final nail In the coffin for digital festival-going. It was always a major fear that studios had when it came to presenting their movies online at film festivals during the COVID-era. Would the titles leak? Well, now they have. The story revolves around an “Interpol agent tracking the world’s most wanted art thief.” EDITED: It is being reported that the film’s budget could be well around $200M. I wrote about Dwayne Johnson back in 7.27.18: “Dwayne Johnson has been trying to find himself of late, box-office wise. His feud with Vin Diesel didn’t help either, which consequentially, whether you want to admit it or not, had Johnson leaving the franchise for a spinoff film....

Unsurprisingly (following its recent domination) Warner Bros polarising “Joker” leads the way with a whopping 11 nominations, including Best Actor for Category favourite Joaquin Phoenix, Beat Director for Todd Phillips, and a coveted best picture nomination. Though it must be added it will most likely only walk away with one or two in form of Phoenix and Hildur Guonadottir for original score. I’ve had a Pitt/Pacino/Hanks top 3 [Predictions] for over a month now, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. You’ll get a slight push from Willem Dafoe (“The Lighthouse”) and Alan Alda (“Marriage Story”) but I see them remaining not more than #4 or #5, respectively. There could definitely be a push to enter those bottom 2 spots from the likes of Joe Pesci (“The Irishman”), Anthony Hopkins (“The Two Popes”), John Lithgow (Bombshell) and Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari)....
